I-66:

Interstate 66 Photos

Photos shown following I-66 from west to east. Click the thumbnails for a full sized view.

Westbound at Exit 23. I-66 ended at this point prior to sections west of here opening. This is why the exit appears to look like a continuation of the mainline. (April 2008)
View west at Mile Marker 24.7. This is one of the oldest sections of I-66. It opened in 1962. (April 2008)
View west near Marshall. One of the few places where Interstate, US and State routes all multiplex on the same stretch of road. (April 2008)
Eastbound at Mile Marker 35.8.
View west from West Ox Road bridge. (April 2008)
View down the HOV Ramp to and from Monument Drive. (April 2008)
View east from the Monument Drive bridge. The ramp coming down in the median of I-66 is the HOV Ramp to and from Monument Drive. (April 2008)
Looking eastbound just before the Nutley Street interchange. Photo taken from the Blake Lane bridge. Notice the end of the Metro Orange Line in the median. (April 2008)
Vienna Metro station in the median of I-66 at the Nutley Street exit. Photo taken from the Blake Lane bridge. (April 2008)
Westbound I-66 just past Nutley Street and the Vienna Metro station. Notice that on mainline I-66 there is no standard right shoulder. During non-rush the right most lane is a "shoulder", but during rush hour the "shoulder" becomes a travel lane. Backups, like the one in this photo, due to disabled vehicles are common. (April 2008)
Looking westbound from the Virginia Lane bridge. This is just inside I-495 (Capital Beltway). The Metro Orange line tracks run in the median of I-66 from just west of Nutley Street to North George Mason Drive where they go underground. (April 2008)
Looking eastbound approaching the Sycamore Street interchange. The East Falls Church Metro station is in the distance in the media of I-66. (April 2008)
View of I-66 with the East Falls Church Metro Station in the media. The crossroad is Sycamore Street.
Looking eastbound on the pedestrian overpass near North Ohio Street. Off-peak congestion is common along I-66 inside The Capital Beltway (I-495). (April 2008)
Typical combo Big Green Sign/Variable Message Sign used on I-66 inside The Capital Beltway. The Variable Message part of the sign is used to show HOV Restrictions when they are in effect. The smaller ground level static signs were added due to reliability issues with the Variable Message Signs. Notice the small ground level truck restriction sign as well. (April 2008)
Typical Restricted Lanes (HOV) variable message sign used on and approaching Interstate 66 outside The Capital Beltway (I-495). This sign is located on Monument Drive.
